Garth is a young boy, confined to a death sentence by an incurable disease. When he is accidentally transported to the afterlife by an errant ghost wrangler, he discovers his true power, and how he can use it to help both the living and the dead. Gorgeous art by Doug TenNapel, and touching story of family and belief, makes this a great graphic novel for young readers. This is also a novel with great pacing for young readers - there's always something going on, and the art depicts action sequences extremely well. Middle school students would especially enjoy this - the art leaps off the page, with tremendous coloring. This book has a great message about believing in yourself, but it would also be fun to use in teaching tone and mood (as the afterlife is a dark, yet very attractive, setting).

I was expecting more from The Blue Girl, my first Charles de Lint read. It was overall a fun read but I didn't like the way things seem to have been resolved relatively quickly at the end. I wasn't really into the way the book is told from the perspectives of the three characters either. I think I might have picked the wrong Charles de Lint book to start with.
