Pale Demon is the ninth book in the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison and an Urban Fantasy from Harper Voyager. Book Blurb: Condemned and shunned for black magic, Rachel Morgan has three days to get to the annual witches' conference and clear her name, or be trapped in the demonic ever-after . . . forever after. But a witch, an elf, a living vampire, and a pixy in one car going across the country? Talk about a recipe for certain disaster, even without being the targets for assassination. For after centuries of torment, a fearsome demon walks in the sunlight - freed at last to slay the innocent and devour their souls. But his ultimate goal is Rachel Morgan, and in the fight for survival that follows, even embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save her. My thoughts: Rachel Morgan can’t win for losing. She has been shunned by the Witches’ Council and is now on her way to the Witches’ Conference hoping a trial will see her clear of the shunning and her status as a white witch restored. She is placing her trust in Oliver - a witch on the council - who agreed to lift the shunning if Rachel keeps quiet about the origin of witches. Trent Kalamack is also on a personal journey and he needs Rachel’s help because he can’t leave Cincinnati on his own. The trouble with Trent is that he trusts no one - but insists that everyone trust him - and he always thinks he knows best. Now a demon has been turned loose and no one - not even the other demons - can vanquish him. But everyone seems to think that Rachel can - and Rachel will give it a shot - or die trying. The Rachel Morgan series is one of my all time favorites - but Pale Demon had me pulling my own hair. :) I have not trusted Trent from the beginning - and I still don’t. I’m not sure where Rachel is headed - but I hope she lets her brain and not her hormones decide the destination. I have to say that I loved Al in this installment. I am eager to see how his relationship with Rachel progresses now that they are on more equal footing. I give Pale Demon 5 out of 5 stars. M
