Yeah I managed to get this one from a first-reads giveaway! Can't wait to start! Finished it! - Great book. Insightful in the power of family and adoption. I don't know what I expected, but I definitely enjoyed the book as well as the righting style.
This books has come highly recommended by students a couple times so I decided to give it a try. It's an alternate world where blacks have enslaved white folks and slavery has ended, but the are in the midst of the Jim Crow era. A small group of white kids are integrating an all black school. It's an interesting thought experiment but I found the racially commentary to be a little bit too obvious. Perhaps because this is a YA novel and I was in the mood for a more grown up novel? I ended up passing it along to my step-daughter before I finished it because our TV has been broken and she was *desperate* for something to read.
