Corn!! The Omnivore's Dilemna is an incredible look into the global food industry, and connects every meal we eat back to its very origin. And unless you make a tremendous effort to eat local and organic produce and meet, everything you eat is basically a form of corn. This book was truly a page-turner, more than any book I have read in the last few years. It explains how industry has manipulated the natural order of food to increase profits, how the government in the 1970s took a major policy shift to support agro-business (the ultimate welfare queen.) I was fascinated throughout the whole book, and it inspired me to put more effort into eating local, organic and unprocessed food. Particularly genius was Pollan's illuminating of the parallel between how Americans increasingly treat their bodies and health poorly and how America as a country treats its environment the same way. Pollan also digs beneath the surface of shallow brand politics ("diet ice cream" is akin to Walmart organic) to convinced me that the local origin of the product is as important, if not more, than what makes it certifiablty organic. I highly recommend to anyone.
Outstanding. I had to put the book down because it pulled so much emotion out. The book is heartbreaking, but without a doubt lovely. I am sincerely looking forward to more works from this author.
