“Gestures are all that I have; sometimes they must be grand in nature. And while I occasionally step over the line and into the world of the melodramatic, it is what I must do in order to communicate clearly and effectively.” Have you ever had a book on your shelf for years and finally, when you read it, it is so wonderful you want to kick yourself for waiting so long to open it? The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of those books. The novel is narrated by a dog, Enzo, and through his eyes, we see an amazing story of resilience and humanity, centered around his owner, Denny. Denny is a semi-professional race car driver, and the title reflects the diligence, patience and self-awareness needed to guide a car in precarious conditions. It also reflects the qualities Denny needs to travel through the track that is his life. The patterns woven throughout the book connecting racing and life earned The Art of Racing in the Rain that extra half star from me. Yes, I own a dog. And Enzo’s logic at times made me laugh out loud. But you don’t need to own a dog to enjoy this book. A word of warning, however. Have a box of tissues handy. I think I cried for the entire second of half of the book. It’s sad and happy, as is life. 4 1/2 stars.

I read this as a teenager and loved it, but I think I need a reread to see how I feel about it as an adult.
