Slow, complicated, well-rendered, demanding, horrifying: I keep seeing this categorized as a kid's book (well, older kids), but I am just not certain how many will stick with it. I see it grouped with "The Book Thief" and that's pretty fair, since I wasn't sure how many would like that ponderously German work, either. I am not sure that I precisely enjoyed reading it, since it made me so uncomfortable, but I surely admired its execution. I'll be donating it to the library, as was intended when it was passed along to me. (11)
I initially made it 150 pages into this book and quit, because the subject matter was so painful. I finally mustered up courage to finish it this weekend. Go me. Implausible at times, but moving both because of the historical context and the well-developed characters.
Disturbing; sinister; weird ... good.
