Oh my gods, this book. It is just so epic. If you love a big sweeping saga, this is a must. A friend lent it to me in 9th grade, and I, in turn, lent it to another friend. We just devoured it. There were many locker-side squee-filled briefings between classes. We spent weeks mooning about the halls at school because of all our feelings about Meggie and Ralph, Justine and Rainer. We hated Luke (a most definite Bad Boyfriend) and wept for Dane. We lived in Drogheda. Who cared for high school anymore? It took me a while to climb out of this book when I was finished. I had been so consumed by it. I had not read anything like it before. I remember being very much impressed by the ideal of love that Meggie and Ralph represented. All of the grand, flawed, people and the sex and passion seemed larger than life. The books I had thought romantic and the boys I thought I liked all seemed pale and flat in comparison. How could life go on? I held on to this book as long as I could, reading my favorite parts over and over, but eventually, and with great reluctance, I returned it to my friend.
