This 1974 version from Avon Books includes the novella Ward No. 6 in addition to the play Uncle Vanya. I was struck by the character Astrov in Uncle Vanya being an early environmentalist as he was showing his historical maps demonstrating the destruction of the forests over time. I like seeing plays and then reading them afterwards, somehow the visual and "atmosphere" cues from the play remain and I get more out of the read, the commentary and historical references from the book add to the original experience. I can see the play and be very open to my own interpretations rather than the opionions of others. Ward No. 6 exposed the awful conditions mental patients were placed in at that time and has to be the most depressing thing I have ever read. There is a reference in Ward No. 6 about life 200 years hence would be more comfortable and easier for those interested in leading exemplary lives. Hmmm .. aren't there lots of opportunities for committing sins today, they just aren't done for basic survival needs such as food and warmth?

i dont know why i continue reading theses books, maybe because i think that they might get better. firstly every single book revolves around zoey and her bloody love life, is she finally going to stick to one guy? secondly the lanuage used by the characters is just so baad....'effing', 'shits sake', 'crap',and much more. who talks like that!?!? and the story line is just the saaaaammmeeeeeeee aarrggghhhhhhhh ive got a few chapters left...ill finish them and see if anythnig 'changes' ok so i finished it....and the ending was better than i expected...i MIGHT...just MIGHT....read the next one....it was a good cliffhanger...i like what happened to heath when he became the vessel...but if zoey whines about him in the next book...and how she 'loves' them all...(slag i say..lol) anyways i liked the stevie rae and rephaim story line thats about it..i was going to give it 2 stars but for the ending ill give it 3..
