Dissipation smothers any chance you have of empathizing with the characters, for better and for worse. The writing is beautiful, but some of the characters came across as poorly-camoflauged mouthpieces more than individuals. True, life would be that much more amazing if people talked like the dialogue is written...I wouldn't mind if everybody had a steady supply of sparkling wit, but it just doesn't come across as plausible. In a novel meant to be realistic, this poses a problem. This book is crafted with precision, though, and can be enjoyed for Fitzgerald's skill rather than the story itself. I always imagine Fitzgerald sneering throughout as he wrote the last hundred pages.
Have you ever found something and were not sure what its purpose is? A rabbit, a grumpy bear, mice, a fox, and a little pink worm all have a different idea on how they would use a book. It takes a curious boy to help them discover a great a book can be. This is a fun story that has a simple story line that will captive young readers. The illustrations are simple and beautifully done. It is fun to see how the expressions of the animals are illustrated. This would be a fun book to use to explain the proper way to treat a book.
