I would probably give this a 3.5, but I always round upon Goodreads. I generally LOVE this series and its edginess. This one was definitely different, an enjoyable contemporary romance, but much more vanilla that what we're used to from this series. Lyric is a rising pop star in need of a reliable bodyguard while the mystery of who is leaving threatening notes in her dressing room is solved. Connor Malone is hired on to watch over her. Lyric has some secrets from her past that make commitment difficult. Despite a dumb assumption near the end of the book, I liked Lyric. She goes against the typical pop-star stereotype. Connor is more of a beta hero, but amazingly sweet and loving. Enjoyable, but not my fav.
I can only think that I would have understood and appreciated it better if I actually knew who Didion was outside of the scope of this book, and knew the context of her life in which to place all of these events. I felt absolutely lost when Didion would mention friends or locations that meant nothing to me, or when she referenced previous novels by her or her husband. I knew there must be a connection to be made, but I had no idea what it was or how to make it. read more...
Rough, but important in terms of the African American experience in the U.S.
The very beginning of this book was very interesting to me, but I am about half-way finished and now it is dulls-ville! Every time I pick it up, I fall right to sleep. I will try to finish it ... but other books are calling my name.
