This is the true story of a Japanese-American family through three generations, from 1905 to present. The bulk of the story is the first generation (and the second, as children) - working for the railroad, making a place for themselves in Hood River, Oregon, facing discrimination, internment during WWII, etc... A history of the Japanese in Oregon as well as somewhat of an agricultural history of Hood River is woven in. Themes: family, history, discrimination, WWII, Japanese-Americans The writing was a little unpolished and the book wasn't well-edited - I found numerous typos and grammar errors. The story was very engaging though, and the author did an excellent job with her research and the way she pulled it all together in the book. I found the achievements of the family members very inspirational.
