This book is sprawling. The size of a phone book, it follows one theory of the Jack the Ripper murders while simultaneously building the world of Victorian London around it with meticulous detail. Moore's writing is characteristically dense, wrapping multiple character arcs and Very Big Ideas About Reality around one of the world's most famous murder mysteries. He gives voice to many sides of class, gender, and insanity in this book while gripping his reader tightly and not letting go even in his lengthy appendices. Eddie Campbell's art gives us the gory details of murder scenes and quiet beaches with equal vibrancy. Part woodcarving, part dirty chapbook illustration, all riveting. Can't say enough about how good this book is. It's a commitment, but well worth the time.
