This was one of those books that had been collecting dust on my shelf for years. I bought it thinking I should give the literary genius of Tom Wolfe another chance. Years ago I had read Bonfire of the Vanities and thought it was just okay. But I should give Wolfe another chance, right? So it sat there and sat there and I finally decided this would be the year to clear those dusty tomes off my shelf. You hear that sound? That’s me kicking myself. I’m beating myself silly because I can’t believe I waiting so long to read this awesome book! From the opening pages I was sucked into the socio-political world of that grand southern city, Atlanta. (A perfect selection, I might add, for the Georgia book in the Around the USA Challenge that I am wrapping up). Wolfe’s characters are alive and meaty and he can’t help but make you laugh at their expense. At society’s expense. Because all this trying to fit in, doing what’s political correct and climbing the corporate ladder is truly funny and sometimes ridiculous. What makes this truly a great novel is that Tom Wolfe weaves all this wit into a fantastic story that has you on the edge of your seat and avoiding all your daily responsibilities for wont of reading just one more chapter. I’m done keeping Wolfe at arm’s length, and I’m ready for another one. Maybe I’ll read The Right Stuff next…
