This book brought back so many memories from elementary school for me. I haven't read the other books in the series and maybe I will now that I have children of my own.

This is the epitome of a popular literary novel. I knew that would be the case, and I read it anyway! There is an interesting story, decent characters, some semblance of depth to the themes, and some poetic language. There is also sensationalizing, the author breaking her own rules for the universe of the novel she's created to have an impressive climactic scene, and a teenager-ish emphasis on romantic love over love for family, even when our main character, Susie, has been given the ultimate gift of a few hours on earth. This book had so much potential, but I suppose I'm not exactly its intended audience. I demand a lot of the books I read, and sensational romance doesn't trump all for me. Themes: tragedy, murder, supernatural, love/romance, family, guilt, grief, 70s
