Tom Werneck Werneck itibaren Whaley Bridge Smithy
This novel generates very strong opinions, which seems to be true of the best novels. Eight years after reading it, I still quote parts of it every day ("*Thank* you," said Baby Kochamma). Now that I can look at it from a distance perhaps the element that most impresses me is its architecture -- incredible pacing and use of foreshadowing, tight plot underneath the lush (I usually HATE that word when applied to Indian writers but this book deserves it) language.
