One of the most imaginative works of fiction I've ever read. Written in 1959, the novel weaves an engrossing "history" of humanity in a post-apocalyptic world. Setting it apart from other works of this kind, the work is set in a decidely religious environment, the monastery of St. Leibowitz, without being overly religious. Important tensions are explored: religion and science, religiosity and secularism, the nature and preservation of human knowledge, the nature of humanity in the face of utter inhumanity. The book is a compelling narrative told in three parts and is an important commentary that is still strongly relevant today. Highly recommended, though those familiar with the nuances and intricacies of Catholicism (as well as Latin) will invariably appreciate the work even more.
