After reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, I just had to pull out this book, Garden Spells, which I read back in 2007. I love a good fantasy and after reading one that was interesting but disturbing (Miss Peregrine), I had a hankering for one that captivated me and left me feeling better for having read it. Garden Spells immediately popped into my mind. Okay, this isn't a YA book, but it is my kind of book, nonetheless. Not only does this book give me license to imagine, but includes so many things that I love to read: small town setting (this one has the added advantage of being Southern), generational family ties, sibling opposites, gardening (horticultural folklore abounds in this story), cooking, and redeeming the past. Now I'm going to take a deep breath and reread this book. I need some literary cleansing. If you haven't read Garden Spells, you might want to put it on your to read list. I recommend it highly.
This isn't the actual copy of the books I have read, I have a very old original version of the books. I like many people have read these many times. Love the second, Two Towers the best.
I love her recipe books for the simple fruit and veggie recipes and the delicious desserts. I feel like her main dish recipes are not always my taste. I am really picky with what I think a cookbook should look like. I think she got it right. Each recipe has a picture, big fonts, simple and not too much on the page to distract my eyes. She gives great tips and explanations.
