Totally worth the hype. It is amazing how well this book avoids single characterization on every level. I contstantly found my self saying "this represents this, and he symbolizes this" but at every instance melville complicates the claims he is making. You get the sense that there is much more going on than you are aware of so obviously it will sustain myriad readings.
