The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini tells a story of love, betrayal, and forgiveness. All of these points are present in the life of Amir, the narrator and main character of the story, who as he comes of age goes through certain situations that will either make or break him in the end. Living through the last days of peaceful Afghanistan, Amir learns many lessons that will one day change his life forever. The close relationship between Amir and Hassan, the son of his fathers servant, is the true backbone of the story. Growing up in what might as well be two different worlds, Amir and Hassan built a friendship like no other. Hassan, although the servants’ son always did what Amir never did, stood up for himself. Hosseini shows, up close, the relationship between these two boys that would definitely be looked down on in society. The turning point during the story is during the kite running tournament. While running the kite for Amir, Hassan is cornered in an alley by some upper-class kids. This unspeakable event changed the relationship between these two boys forever. Escaping the Taliban overtaking Afghanistan, Amir and his father, Baba, escape to America when they try to adjust to the society. Moving into an Afghan community, Amir gets his education and eventually gets married to the women of his dreams. But even happiness could not rid him of the haunting of him being a coward and disloyal to the one person who truly cared. A phone call from his fathers’ dear friend, Rahim Khan, brings back memories that he’s been trying to forget for years. Amir returns to Afghanistan, only to be told some things about his father that he never would have guessed. He finally has a chance to make things right for himself and the people he has hurt on his journey. The twists and turns at the climax of the tale make you see the book in a whole different light. Tears and laughs will both be present in the reading of The Kite Runner. Showing the present state of Afghanistan, while telling the tale of a boy who as he grows up learns some of life’s most valuable lessons, Hosseini keeps us in our seats yearning for more. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to broaden their horizons and be willing to learn while enjoying the book. It is definitely a GOOD READ!!!

Not the best of the series so far. I figured out the culprit somewhere along the line. The writing is so spare that sometimes I think I don't like it and yet I keep coming back.
