The book dragged as it went on. I enjoyed the concept, but thought it was poorly executed (which I blame on the book's editors more than the author). After promising to examine the food history through the lens of several different families, which I thought would be straightforward and effective, the book jumps all over the place in a disorganized fashion. Would have benefitted from more historical photographs throughout.
I should have done this long ago. I wanted to write a brief review to explain why I love the Thursday Next series so very much. The Eyre Affair is the first in the series, and a great way to start our journey with Thursday (the heroine of our series). Thursday is clever, witty, and formidable. Don't let the pony tail fool you, bad guys, this girl has struck fear in the heart of Goliath (literally!) So let me count the ways I love this book so much: ~ Thursday Next (she is such a fun character. One I wish I could meet in real life and have a chat with over tea and try not to gush too much. Cause she'd hate that!) - The literary references. This is a book for book lovers. From Lewis Carroll, to Kafka, Shakespeare, to Austen and lots in between. These authors, and the characters they created, are alive in Thursday's world and often make cameo appearances in each of the TN novels. - The absolutely brilliant humor. The word play alone just kills me. Jasper Fforde knows how to tickle a funny bone, and then some. These books are funny on so many different levels. This is a book that isn't afraid to be silly one minute, and ingeniously clever the next. You can have your pun, or spot on word play, or enjoy witty bantering dialogue, or just some good ol' irony and satire. It's all there for our pleasure. - This series is just original! It's creative, it's unique, it's different. I've read nothing like it before or since. How often do you find contemporary books like that nowadays? - I could go on and on, but I'll just end with this. I read these books over and over again and they stand up to multiple re-readings. Every time I discover something new and enjoy it every single read. I've also been inspired to read fabulous books I'd have otherwise missed (The Trial, for starters!) I strongly urge you to jump into this crazy, comical, bizarre, and thoroughly entertaining world with me. I'm sure you won't be sorry you did! Just to know, there are several special features for each of the books. Go and enjoy Jasper Fforde's websites. He gives lots of bonus add-ons and has some pretty amazing and crazy stuff up there.
