I always think of this as a companion book to Blood Meridian -- this one is much looser, even more anecdotal, and has a lot more outright humor. It also strains a bit more, perhaps, in the inevitable grandiose patches...But to my taste, in this book and Blood Meridian, McCarthy was getting the closest to perfecting his particular artistic vision and style.
