Though Robbins never fails to come through with a healthy dose of sexism (which he frames as some sort of postmodern humor), read this book slowly to savor the other delicious parts. I learned more about the conflict in the Middle East from this book than I had in the twenty some years I was when it was in my hands. Can o' beans and conch continue to be my favorites, and the super bowl strip scene is unreal.
This is one of my top 10 favs. It is quite a story, one of those books that you could read over and over.
Uhg. Between this book and Junie B. Jones, I'm getting the impression I should avoid Barbara Park altogether. I gave this two stars instead of only one because the twist at the end with the dirty socks was clever. And the illustration work is sort of interesting.
The history. The art. The romance. The city (of Venice). The mystery that sucks you right in and carries you along until the last page. What a wonderful book.
