One word: Creep-tastic.

Quirke is not a particularly compelling hero - his alcoholic excesses are described with far too much verisimilitude for me, and the mystery was ho-hum. At the end, a disappointing solution that is too fantastical, I think. I didn't think the characters were outstanding, I didn't think it had a particularly good sense of place or time, and the plot was just too ridiculous. A disappointment.
