This is a wonderful book, a concise and clearly illustrated look at how underlying geology is expressed as features on the surface. Lobeck shows us how many different landforms came to be, focusing on shorelines, rivers, and lakes, helping us understand things like "Why is that particular island there, and why does it have that shape?" This book predates the wide acceptance of plate tectonics, so of course there are a couple of big-picture explanations missing. But what is in the book is, to my knowledge, largely sound. This really helped me grasp some concepts I had inklings of or concepts I understood dimly. One interesting aspect is that a good amount (but by no means all) of the examples used in the book are from the eastern United States, an area I hadn't studied much of, having received my geology education in California. So that was a nice bonus, to learn about a new area.

This was a book that did not stir a great deal of emotion in me as I'd hoped--but it did spark some intellectual passion. I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the real history of Romeo and Juliet--I felt that the original Romeo and Giulietta had beautiful passion, very sad. However, I was a little disappointed in the modern-day Alessandro and Julie. They had a warm sweetness about them, but not as much passion as I'd hoped. Still, it was beautiful to see them finally get their happy ending.

I have the paperback on pre-order but reading all these great reviews on here I don't know if I can wait another couple of months---I just may have to go kindle on this one.

There is no series I love more, and I think kids will like this one just as well as the rest of Gerald and Piggie's adventures, but for me it was a little too predictable.
