Another book I had to read for African-American History (good reading list, as you can tell). It's a great memoir and I think gives you a good look inside the process of integration. It was interesting to compare her experience with mine, because, yes, I was part of an school integration initiative in my hometown of Ann Arbor. It wasn't as violent of an experience as Mrs. Patillo Beals, but there were certainly picketers and angry parents waiting for me when the bus dropped me off. It's funny how much the world HASN'T changed in almost 40 years.
