This is one of those books that was really talked up and I felt like I should just loooove it--and then I only liked it. Maybe my expectations were too high. I'd also been prepared to read it as a mystery, which wasn't the best way to read it. This will teach me not to go into books with a more open mind! It's a good book for dealing with the Tough Issue of doing the right thing, even when it means things won't turn out well for you. It will also please teens who enjoy debates about religious philosophy. I think the biggest problem with me having so many expectations was that I was comparing it to "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," which I did looooove. I never felt as invested in what happens to Marcelo as I did in the other. I was also confused by how Marcelo kept saying his condition wasn't really autism. I know there are lots of variations on the spectrum and it doesn't have to fit neatly into a category (although it made it hard for me to come up with a tag for this review). The point is that just because a character is distant from the people around him, it doesn't mean he has to be distant from the reader, and I felt distant from Marcelo.
My all-time favorite book! I love the sarcasm, wit and humor. Oh, and when I went to N.O. and saw the hotdog carts were for real, it just made it even better!
