Among other literary abilities, Sofer has the (paradoxical) ability to write in a gentle way about torture. I found myself caught up in the husband's story during his imprisonment and the wife's attempt to keep herself and Shirin together. A number of Fulmore MS students are reading this book as part of the Austin Mayor's Book Club Challenge, and we will be at the City Hall events honoring the author on April 24th. Also, a parent donated 10 copies of the book for students @ Fulmore and many students have persuaded their parents to purchase the book.

After reading a number of Chuck Palahniuk books, I have come to find them rather formulaic in a particular and absurd way. Lullaby fit this mold perfectly -- the character archetypes, the anarchist overtones, the repetitive dialogue ("and I'm counting one, two, three..."), the character quirks. I could go on. Despite that, I rated this book four stars because a) the underlying story was so interesting, despite the disjointed way it was presented, and b) this book is on the same level as his other works, which I also liked and rated highly. I truly think that whichever of his books I read first I would have been more drawn to, and whichever I read later I would think were derivative. That all being said, I think I'll be taking a break from reading any Chuck Palahniuk novels for a good long while.

not as good as the first two volumes. get's a little too "cosmic" in scope.
