Think Charlotte Bronte for the 21st century. Meyer's vampire chick lit is the most romantic, emotionally overwrought, gothic work I've read by a modern author! This book is *the book* with teen girls right now, following the success of Libba Bray's "Rebel Angels" (which was only slightly less gothic). I liked it, but I wasn't overly impressed. The vampire hero, Edward, is flat in this utter physical perfection and the protagonist, Bella, is absolutely spineless at points. The charm comes in the Edward's family and in Bella's friend, Jacob. Teen girls will (and do) love the complete immersion in teen romance and doomed Romeo & Juliet overtones of this cross-species[?] romance. Read it for escape, not complexity or growth.

I loved this book. I found it a very interesting look at where America came from in terms of its relationship with the gods, and where it might be heading. It is also just a fun little adventure around america, and backstage.
