I read this book in one day - today. It stunned me. It was perhaps the most brilliant illustration of human ambivalence I have ever encountered, and it wounded me deeply. Somehow Schlink allowed condemnation and understanding to intersect (even as he claims that it can't be done), and it is impossible to determine if that intersection is filled with emotion or void of it.
