I simply love this book:)
A sci-fi book told from three different characters' perspectives, one in modern day Brazil, one thirty years in the future, and one from the 1700's. The back cover hook told me they were all connected somehow. This was enough to get me interested, combined with the fact that I lived in Brazil for two years. Good thing I did. I don't know how this book would be comprehensible to someone who hasn't lived in Brazil. No, not comprehensible, it's just that the author throws so much brazilian verbiage and locations in that you either would have to constantly flip back and forth between the story and the glossary or be logged on to wikipedia the whole time. The fact that I recognized a lot of the exotic places and the culture made it slightly more enjoyable than I think it would have been otherwise. The book overall was okay by the end of it. The beginning lagged a bit, the middle and latter half piqued my interest some more, and the ending was somewhat strange but sort of interesting. I think there were two main reasons why this book didn't come off as well as it could have. 1) The author's writing style lost me a lot. It was just plain confusing in some places. "So...they're in a boat now? When did that happen?" etc. 2) This book is definitely a sci-fi book, but in the first half, a lot of the events that happen have nothing to do with that. Not that that's bad, but the way the book transitions into the sci-fi element in the later halfed seemed rushed and confusing. Overall....meh. So-so. Definitely not for everyone.
I enjoyed this, but I was led to believe that it was some sort of perfect piece of writing. I just thought it was Really Good.
