Ms featherstine has fast become one of my favorite authors. A very powerful story of love and life. Anais and lindseys love captured me right from the beginning and didn't let go until long after I finished the book. Couldn't put it down and read it in one stretch.
My sister's favourite book as a teenager, she had sections memorized and would recite to us. Brings back good memories.
The book is a self described "documentary novel" by Avi. That sounds terribly dry, but I could hardly put it down. The story is about a teenage boy who wants to "hum" during the taped playing of the national anthem in home room even though the rule is to stand at respectful silence. Sounds simple and sincere. We see the story from teenage Phillip's view point, the teacher's viewpoint (Mrs. Narwin) and the school administrators'. The outcome is reminiscent of a corporate board room. This book has so much meat to it. I hope we will read this for book club, so much to talk about, so much to learn.
This was life changing.
Haunting, lovely, a terrific debut.
