This book got me off my Eggleston stance (somewhat) and his work feels a lot 'wider' with a some overlap of content/subject with Eggleston - not freakishly surprising. The cityscapes he captured reminded me of the story about R. Crumb going around a city with a photographer so he could capture what it all looked like - all the curved wires etc. - only Shore shares his eye on what is lovely and now, mostly gone, naturally or humanly. Images stick out in my mind and his use of color as he captures spare motel rooms with tiny tv's and half-eaten meals at McDonald's reminds me of paintings from centuries ago with pheasant meals on shiny silver trays and palaces of shiny tiled floors - here's where we are right now Shore seems to say and we aren't there anymore nor were we there for long.

If I could give this book 6 stars I would. I can't even remember the last time a book took me for a ride like this! I love a book that is nearly impossible to put down because that's when you know you're "living" it along with the characters. The Hunger Games is intense, fast-moving, and an emotional rollercoaster. It might be a bit much for a younger audience (as a parent I would read this one before my children, just to be sure I felt they were mature enough to handle the violent nature of the "Hunger Games"). I cannot wait for the sequel to this book (coming September 2009)!

Not as good as others, but still good.

Alan Moore often comes under fire for putting more text in the frame of his comics than artwork, but the man can write and write well. Along with Dave Gibbons who's moody artwork provides the perfect companion to the prose, Moore constructs a world where superheroes are all but outlawed. It's dystopian and severe, but also great fun. One of the best comic books of all time.
