So so bad. I had this book in my possession for over a year and was always so intrigued by it for some reason, then when I finally read it it was just supremely disappointing. I don't even remember what the story or point of the book was at all. My mind would wander after every paragraph and it was such a struggle to finish. Looking back, I'm surprised I actually made it all the way through.

A typical easterner comes west and lives the "a life of hardship". It was so predictable and trite and did not describe the "real west" as I know it.

Raymond Chandler has been one of my favorite writers since I stumbled upon a collection of his short stories while toting a gift card around some mega store. The Long Goodbye reminded me what I love so much about this author and crime fiction of the early half of the 20th century. It takes true mastery to set a reader up so they know what twist is coming next and think they have everything figured out, allow that twist to occur, but then take it a level beyond their imagination. Chandler manages this easily while inventing metaphors so perfect in tone and relationship, yet so inventive he plants himself as the Mrs. Fields of metaphor. Imagine Dan Brown's structure with literary talent backing the writing and you have The Long Goodbye.
