Meyer is a police officer in Sitka, Alaska. In the world of the book, the area has been given to the Jews following World War II and they are allowed to remain for 60 years. Meyer begins investigating a murder in his apartment complex which leads him through all sorts of strange discoveries and coincidences. All this is complicated by the fact that it's time for the Jews to leave Sitka and they're scrambling to find places to go. Themes: chess, divorce, pie at the airport, swear words are in the "American" language, tunnels under the city This is not the sort of book I usually read and enjoy, but I did enjoy it. It was very funny at times, especially when Meyer accidentally throws himself out the window in his underwear. His friend Berko is really interesting and funny too. This story had enough going on besides the murder-mystery that I was fairly engaged throughout.

The timeframe of when Elphie and Galinda are rooming together is my favorite. It gets weird in certain points (like with beastiality), and Macguire tries to put so much into it- such as political and religious commentary- that it gets overwhelming. but I love the concept.
