Didn't live up to the hype. Unnecessarily trashy too.

i am totally impressed with how the author got involved in the lives of the teens she met. the book made me think about the coming of age experience of trans teens and how much harder their experience is when our society is so reliant on the gender binary as a means of organizing structures and support. the book was well written and i highly recommend this to people who interact with children who might be different in the ways they express their gender identity. actually, i would recommend this to anyone who interact with children because it reminds you how important it is to show children and in my case students how much we care for them and how our love for them is unconditional and is not dependent on them following in line of preconceived notions of what their future should be like.

I loved this book. It's so well-written that it was much easier to "get into" than I anticipated. The obvious comparison is to Dante's 'Commedia,' which is a more difficult read, but is noticeably more artful and complex (in a good way), but Milton's descriptions and characterizations are quite good on the whole. Satan, of course, is written so well it's almost frightening, but his progression as a dynamic character to ever further extremes of the absurdity of arrogance and self-exaltation are a good object lesson to the person who doesn't get too caught up on the initial picture of him as noble anti-hero. I was a little disappointed with depictions of God for various reasons, but to even try to write this kind of an epic... I don't know how I would do it better.
