What a zombie thriller at the beginning with rabid kids eating guts, deer jumping off cliffs, and some wilderness survival. Then, once Alexandra ends up alone at Rule, a post-"event" town where some creepy happenings are going on and people are learning about this electronic even. People with brain issues have been awakened or back to their original self, there are the gifted who go above and beyond with supernatural powers. Alex is special because she was young (didn't die from the original event like the very young and very old did) and because of her cancer she ended up being gifted with a talent although it doesn't become the focus, just a bonus for her survival. I never really did get the connection necessarily with her carrying around her dead parents' ashes but really in the end it's that the past becomes the past and you must move toward a new future (much like the Pfeffer series).

Turns out that Henry VIII was all that, after all. And Ann Boleyn actually wasn't. I love historical fiction, and this book was certainly fun, fun, fun. The educational value is limited to gaining information about Tudor undergarments, however.
