there is something so pleasant, so simple, so elegant about donna leon's writing style in this first of her commissario brunetti mysteries...it is rare to find such eloquence and laughter in a murder mystery, but this example left me thirsting for more. unfortunately, most of the subsequent books to not match this one for sheer promise. (they are enjoyable nonetheless)

Best book ever! Anyone who rhymes "friskito" with "bandito" and has phrases like "my manners are mellow/ I'm sweet like the Jell-o" is alright in my book.
