Before I tell you how good this book is, let me tell you something about the authors. Guillermo Del Toro was the director of the 3 Oscar winning movie, "Pans Labyrinth", and several other well known movies. Chuck Hogan has written several mysteries, the most noted was the "Prince of Thieves", which is now being made into a movie. "The Strain" will grip you from the first page to the last page and will have you screaming for more. The best part is that there is more, this is the first book in a triology. Vampire books have been the rage over the past year, but "The Strain" has them all beat, by far. This book is not only entertaining, but downright scary. It is also not for the faint of heart or squeamish, we are dealing with vampires here and they can get quite nasty. A plane from Berlin is landing at JFK in New York. The plane lands and is given instructions to proceed to an assigned gate. Air Traffic Control loses contact with the plane and sends someone to the tarmac to find it. The plane is found on the runway but is completely shut down, and all the shades are drawn. A team from CDC is brought in to board the plane and find that all the passengers are dead and ghostly looking. Well, not all passengers are dead, there are still four breathing, even though it would have been impossible for them to survive a plane that was completely shut down. Abraham Setrakian, a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, is now living in New York and knows what is going on and has the knowledge to stop it. It is discovered that "The Master", a rogue vampire, has been smuggled into New York on the plane and is making slaves of those he comes in contact with. Those who have been bitten must go through a transformation period that makes them stronger every day. These creatures, although considered vampires, act more like "ZOMPIRES". They definately feed on the blood of humans but walk around in a state that is very reminiscent of the cult movie, "Night of the Living Dead". The book has all the earmarks and ingredients of a bestseller, It is so good, it will keep you reading late into the night, and so scary it will keep you up until sunrise, and find yourself screaming for MORE, MORE, MORE!!!!!!
Admittedly, I'm late to the Dennis Lehane canon. Picked this one up for a Florida trip, and wasn engrossed immediately. The PI team of Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro are flesh and blood compelling, and apparently anchor a series of books. Ben Afleck made one of them, Gone Baby Gone, a movie. Well plotted, explosive and gritty. I'm sold, and will get more.
