I started this book with mediocre expectations. I read some young adult books because I teach high school English but often I read them because they tend to be so much more imaginative than many adult books I come across. This book was far from the mundane overdone teen angst book that I was expecting. I love that the book is set in Czechoslovakia (not sure I spelled that correctly!)which is a setting that is not often used in books. The street vendors, alleyways, and culture of the city came alive through the author's eyes. Also unexpected was the fantasy element...the description on the back side of the book did not do this book justice. I respect the fact that this author can include this fantastical world(s) yet not have crazily unpronouncable names and events to go with it. The author wraps you up in these characters and you begin to identify with them, both the "good" and "bad" characters. Deep down, this book promotes acceptance in our world, despite differences people may have in race, culture, or lifestyle. It shows that people can break that cycle and that some people deserve second chances.
