Enjoyable, at times highly suspenseful read. The narrator's conflicting loyalties between his native anglo-saxon people and the Danes who kidnapped him as a child and raised him made the historical battles and personalities more personal and dramatic. I liked that neither side was portrayed solely as heroes or villains and sometimes that line gets even more blurred. The author finds some truly lovely turns of phrase or descriptions that would strike me and I'd pause and smile. He even finds beauty in some bloody battle scenes. Those little gems popped out of the more mundane prose, making it all the more enjoyable a book. Many friends recommended Cornwell to me, and I'm glad to have finally gotten around to reading him. I'm sure I'll pick up the second in the series very soon.

I enjoy Lidia's PBS show, and the recipes I have tried from this book were delicious. I attended a tasting at her restaurant Felidia in NYC, and she is as delightful and charming in person as she is on her show and in her cookbooks.
