I'm finally getting around to reading the 2011 Alex Award Winners! I think I picked the wrong book to start with--the committee would have had to talk me into this one. The action just moves sooooo slowly. I knew we'd eventually find out who was causing all the little German girls to disappear, but it took me a week to finish the book to find out who was murdering them. And, if you know me, you know that it should not take me a week to read a little book. I just couldn't get sucked in. The first third was great and I zipped through the last third of the book tonight, but the middle took too long. The main character, Pia, reminded me of To Kill A Mockingbird's Scout because she's forced to recognize evil in her small town and has to learn that things aren't always what they seem. She's a regular Nancy Drew, too.

Asking me which are the best 50 books I’ve ever read, Illiad and Odysse will be definatly two of them I name,… books I don’t get tired to read again and again. ایلیاد و اودیسه پس از این همه قرن که از سروده شدنشان گذشته، هم چنان خواندنی اند و میزان فروش چاپ ها و ترجمه های تازه شان به زبان های اروپایی رقیب پر فروش ترین آثار، نظیر آثار شکسپیر اند. وسعت واژه های بکار گرفته شده و زیبایی روایت این دو اثر، چنان است که خواننده هرگز زشتی جنگ و وقایع نامبارک را آن چنان که هستند، احساس نمی کند. در مورد این دو اثر هم مانند آثار شکسپیر، بسیار گفتگو شده و از آن جمله گفته اند که نویسنده یا شاعر این دو اثر یک نفر نبوده و گاه حدس زده اند که ایلیاد مجموعه ی اشعار چند شاعر است. ایلیاد تنها بخشی کوچکی از جنگ "تروا" را در بر می گیرد و نه همه ی ده سال محاصره و فتح شهر را. و اودیسه شرح ماجراهای بازگشت "اودیسئوس" نزد زن و فرزندش، از تروا به "ایتاکا"، مرکز پادشاهی اوست و گرفتاری های او بر سر راه و آنچه بر سر زن و فرزندش در ایتاکا می آید. هر دوی این آثار توسط سعید نفیسی به فارسی برگردانده شده و اولین چاپ آنها در 1337 توسط انتشارات علمی و فرهنگی منتشر شده است، که تاکنون باید به چاپ نهم یا دهم رسیده باشد.

Really good idea ruined by girly melodrama. Plus where's the hoverboards?

This book is the first book I could actually read in the car. I read it on our honeymoon trip through Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico, and literally couldn't put it down.
