A great teen read, about a fat kid who is so self-conscious about his weight that he tried to kill himself. A street-kid saves his life and gets him to see things differently. It's an awesome "be who you are" story. Great for boys. Watch for profanity and drugs.

I recently re-read this book (read it years ago in my much younger days (though perhaps i really read the short story at the time for i did not remember much of the book), and wow this was as amazing as i remembered it! Such astute insights into societal relationships, shows how everyone thinks theyre a master of a trade while really they are hardly at all... when charlie learns the truth about his 'friends' it is heart-breaking, and yet the end at least is a bit redeeming, in that they truly do care just merely cant bear having themselves brought down. Everyone says how this book is so sad, which it is, yet it is also so educational and I think the greatest lesson learned is the primacy of fully understanding oneself. Bottom-line, it's pretty clear why this has become a classic.
