This book was WAAY too much fun. Anne Fadiman is Clifton Fadiman's daughter, and she has collected this book of essays about book-love. She is funny and frank and the book is a delight. There are essays on merging her library with her husband's, on the delight of finding long, delicious words, on sonnets, on "carnal-love" book lovers versus "courtly-love" book lovers (for the record, I'm in the carnal-love category--my books know they are loved), ink pens, flyleaf inscriptions, the compulsive editing of the errors around us :-) , catalogs, even plagiarism. All are delightful. I recognized myself so often and kept reading parts to my dh, who doesn't always "get" it. It is so reassuring to read books by people as compulsive as I am about books, since in my "real life" I've often felt like the only book nut. I do have some delightful online friends who are fellow nuts, but most of the people in my real life have been perplexed by me since I was about 3. :-)

An exceptionally engaging second novel by Judith Hendricks! I think we have a GREAT new up and coming authoress. I was lost in this story from beginning to end. From back cover: "The first time I saw my mother was the night she died. The second time was at a party in Santa Fe. After a childhood spent in an institution and a series of foster homes, Avery James has trained herself not to wonder about the mother who gave her up. But her safe, predictable life changes one night when she stumbles upon the portrait of a woman who is the mirror image of herself. Slowly but inevitably, Avery is compelled to discover all she can about her mother, Isabel. Avery is drawn into complex relationships with the people who knew her mother. As she weaves together the threads of her mother's artistic heritage and her grandmother's skills as a healer, Avery learns that while discovering Isabel provides a certain resolution into her life, it's discovering herself that brings lasting happiness."

2nd CD: so far, so excellent! narrator is superb, story is full, references to popular songs makes me want to listne to them in a whole new way. excellent all the way through, both the story and the reading of it! hialternating between the french revolutionary period and today, two young women struggle through terrible ordeals. there is a small amount of magical realism and the need to suspend incredulity toward the end, but its just an excellent story!

This was a good read for his first solo book. It kept me engaged and wanting to keep reading.

This is the story of Ada and Van - cousins (actually siblings) who begin their sexual relationship at the ages of 12 and 14, respectively. The story follows them from their first meeting through their late 90's in a format that is Van writing about this experience. Woven in are his and Ada's notes about the manuscript, as well as Van's reflections on time and space (he's a philosopher). It is also taking place in an alternate universe, where Russia and America are more or less connected and the world is 50 years behind ours. Themes: language/play on words, erotic/ardor, early enchantment and what stems from it, incest, time The play on words is constant here and often amazing, sometimes irritating. The relation of this book to Lolita was extremely interesting for me and, really, the best part of the read. Sections of this are extremely confusing, especially Van's lectures on "the texture of time" and etc... The eroticness of their world was unique - I liked the random inclusion of the beginnings of the Villas of Venus. If I had not known about the other world thing though, I would have missed it entirely.
