Addicting and Intense. Following the rise of Tris, this story started rough around the edges with the gray scaled Beatrice who lives in a world of selfless acts. Her class, Abnegation lives by the ideals of selfless deeds, at the age of 16 she endures test to discover which of the fives classes to join. She makes the choice to become Tris, the Ruthless, Brave, and Fearless member of Dauntless. However after choosing this class now she must survive the initiation or risk becoming factionless outside the destroyed Chicago. The chapters end with cliffhangers forcing you to white knuckle one after another until dawn. Veronica Roth created something new with this Dystopic Thriller by creating a hardened character. Rather than Katinss from The Hunger Games, who is too broken and poor me to do anything for herself, Tris is cold, smart and dead set on her agenda. Divergent is a must read!
For some reason, I just couldn't finish this book. I NEVER not finish a book, and I've loved everything else I've read by Rushdie. In this one, I just didn't care at all what happened to the characters. Maybe I'll have to revisit it some other time.
Read this for a class a couple of semesters ago, and it's a really good book to read if you want to dig through all the crap during an election season.
Surprisingly poignant commentary on our relationships with others. At first I thought it ended rather abruptly, but on second consideration the story really needs that to put the point across. A fun read that leaves you with something to think about.
It was tough to get through the first 200 or so pages, but after that, everything started to come together. The last couple chapters were shocking and intense.
