I give three stars cuz Ssalinger good job of developing sympathy for characters and a quality of loss of innocence in a backdrop that would otherwise seem benign and superficially sophomoric imparted by the high schoolers who are portrayed. Definitely more appreciated at a younger age. Specifically, before you realize you must become an adult.

If i would be a guy instead of being this mostly unladylike girl, I`d be Harry Dresden except the being a wizard part. Haplessly good-hearted, short-sighted, blundering through most situations with all my might, but still trying to belong to the bright and shiny part of the world. Jim Butcher writes the best underdog action, with eat your heart out full on battle scenes that your subconscious will try to repeat in your dreams, where you end up flailing your arms around trying to make magic happen. True story.

Price writes this, his first novel, as if he's trying to channel William Faulkner, but his long, convoluted sentences lack the fiery, dreamlike clarity of Faulkner's. The big-hearted compassion that makes Price's later work so noteworthy is evident here, but the prose still reads as if it is coming from an author who hasn't yet found his own voice. As is the case.
