Shifter anthology. I found the first story Lion Eyes By Jodi Lynn Copeland indifferent. The background on the shifters was muddy and the heroine's mom got over some really strong prejudices really quickly - and then there was the fact that the hero busts out of jail and kills the REAL bad guy who just happens to be a cop...without credible witnesses. Tiger Eye By Kit Tunstall was better, the setting was better done and there was a little more tension. Hidden Heart By Kate Steele is excellent - plot, characterization and setting are well done. A real mixed bag!
For the most part, this is a bullshit book comprised of stuffy suggestions, fluffy witticisms, and philosophy-lite. I don't agree with the majority of his "must read" classics, nor do I respect his narrow taste in music. If you want to read interesting literary and historical quotes, then pick up a copy of Oxford's or Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. If you want to grasp something from literature then simply read, think, and discuss with friends. There's no need to read a book about it. This was a waste of my time and of the paper it was printed on.
I was warned the first book i the series was a tad childish and I'd have to agree... But over all it was an enjoyable read. The first adventures of a preadolescent boy and his friends while attending their first year at a school devoted to teaching wizardry. I finished the book and watched the movie right after. And I can say that for the first time that I've seen the movie followed the book so closely I had to rewind it to catch things it left out or changed...
The Hunger Games was well-written, and I am familiar with "The Lottery" (There are no new plots--just ways of presenting them). However, the subject matter is extremely depressing. I strongly advised my 11 year old grandaughter not to read it. I would advise parents to have their children wait until age 16 to read it. I see no reason for young children to be introduced to such gruesome and depressing ideas. I am a former 9th grade English Teacher.
I loved all the anecdotes about 17th century politics, life under the Puritans (which didn't keep Pepys from chasing everything in a skirt he could lay his hands on...). An excellent read.
