Jack Sweettooth is a collection of three short stories of a mouse, Jackson Winstanley Sweettooth the seventy-third. Jack is the pet mouse of Matthew Bailey, who loves his pet, although his feelings aren’t the same as Mrs Bailey, who initially likes to blame Jack for things that go wrong in the house, losing jewellery, eating birthday cake and so on. She soon changes her mind when he finds her lost ruby (the focus of the first story). Jack then has further adventures when he is threatened with becoming lunch by the next door neighbour’s cat, and then finds love with Matthew’s friend’s mouse. All three stories are nice and short with excellent illustrations of the main plot points of the book. Throughout the first story there are also numerous illustrations of the time on a clock face, so some added educational material! There is something for both boys and girls to enjoy, the peril of Jack against the cat, and Jacks eventual marriage to Blossom. The print is large and well spaced so easy for all levels of readers to engage, and there are some challenging words to, some of which are explained within the story itself. Overall, an easy, accessible book and a quick read with adventure, love and redemption, all in a days work for a pet mouse!
