i read this book years ago but still sometimes think about it. i'm currently reading "a million little pieces" by james frey, but my mind just keeps going back to this augusten burroughs book, which i found more engaging a read. the scene in which augusten examines his apartment and takes out the many bags of trash just blew my mind. it's a reality check not often disclosed in anecdotes of recovery from substance abuse.

it was hard for me to remember that this was fiction and not even listed as historical fiction at my library. i found the characters were likable and real. It inspired me to want to learn more about mallory and his trips and life- a sign of a well written book i think. and i still don't get why people want to climb everest.. and nobody say "because it's there".
