The cover of this book is misleading. The title of this book is misleading. It's about a man. A student magician. And true there is a shape-changer, and he does have a wife. There is some mystery around the house and servants of them Shape Changer, who is teaching the student-magician. As Ms. Shinn's first novel, I found it hard to get into, but it was a fascinating world she created and an intriguing relationship. It ended the only way it could have, while remaining true to the characters. While some of her stories have elements of Sci-Fi, this is pure fantasy. Kudos to her on such an original debut.

It was a good book. I liked the main character. It's mainly a shoot'em up book. I don't consider it a character book.
