The book was ok. I just watched the movie and found it to be much more engaging... but that could be because Queen Latifah is my heroine.

In a word, this book is "full". Ultimately, this works both for and against this book--the fullness of his descriptions of his life bear the mark of youthful self absorbtion (he was only thirty when it was published), occaisonally interspersing thoughtful commmentary that only hindsight and age bring. On the other hand, the balance between humor and tragedy (ie: the death of both his parents from cancer) is perfect. What makes me hesitant to give this book a perfect rating is simply the raging generation x-ness of this book: it doesn't really age well, and (as someone who grew up with this sensibility) becomes annoying. I found myself only able to take it in parts. However, the skill with which it is written and themes it tackles overtakes this at points, and shows someone who is still struggling to grow up, something truly timeless.
